A lovely gentle book. Through telling Elizabeth Gould's story the book touches on a variety of different themes to do with the autonomy of women, parenting and our treatment or mistreatment of animals in the name of science. However, they are given a much gentler and restrained treatment than I expected. I did like Elizabeth very much, after I had put aside my 21st century sensibilities and accepted her as a woman of her time.
As an added bonus, this edition is one of the most visually pretty books I have read. The illustrations make it a real collectors piece.
